Include a YouTube Flash video in your presentation
Problem
You'd like to include a YouTube video in your presentation but don't know where to start.
Solution
We bring you not one but two, two, two! two-torials!
Here's one from the PowerPoint Team Blog
And from PowerPoint MVP Jean-Pierre Forestier, you can read about another method right here.
Preparation
- Download and install ClipFinder
- Download and unzip/install JW FLV Media Player
- Create a folder where you'll save your presentation. We'll call this the presentation folder from here on.
- Copy the player.swf file from the unzipped JW FLV Media Player folder and paste it into the presentation folder.
Get the video from YouTube
- Go to the Youtube site and find the video you want to include. Copy the web address of the video from the browser's address bar.
- Open ClipFinder and click on URL Address (at the top right of the ClipFinder screen)
- Paste the video's web address (use Ctrl+V) into the Address of the video box, then click Download to save the video to the presentation folder.
Add the video to your presentation
- Open your PowerPoint presentation.
- If you use PowerPoint 2007, click the Developer tab (use Office Button | PowerPoint Options to display it if it's not already visible). If you use PowerPoint 2003 or previous, choose View | Toolbars and put a check next to VIsual Basic if there's not one already there. Then click Control Toolbox on the Visual Basic toolbar.
- Click More Controls (it's the icon with the crossed hammer and wrench with "..." below them).
- In the (long) list that appears, locate and double-click Shockwave Flash Object.
- The More Controls dialog box will disappear and you'll be returned to PowerPoint with a crosshair cursor active. Use it to draw a shape on the slide where you want the movie to appear.
- Right-click the shape you just drew and choose Properties from the pop-up menu that appears.
- Next to Movie, write the complete path to the presentation folder followed by player.swf followed by ?file= followed by the name of the movie you downloaded. Add no extra spaces. For example, it might look like this:
C:\Presentations\MyYouTubeShow\player.swf?file=MyKewlMovie.flv - Click theX in the upper right corner of the Properties window to close it.
- Press F5 to start the slide show.
- Click on the arrow to start the film.
