PowerPoint files open as read-only, can't save
Problem
You double-click a file's icon in Windows Explorer to open it. The file opens as read-only and you can't save it (except by doing a Save As and saving it under a new name.
Solution
Quit PowerPoint, change your Windows Explorer view to show something other than Details in the Preview pane (or turn the preview pane off)
Then double-click the file's icon to open it again.
