About Run Program links

While you can include Run Program links in the HTML that PPT2HTML generates, it's difficult to get them to work right, and even more difficult to predict exactly what will happen when a visitor to your site clicks one of these links.

A lot depends on their browser's security settings. The link may do nothing at all. It may ask them if they want to download the program file from your site or run it from there, and they may get a security warning. Or it may simply run the program from your site, the way you expected it to.

Notice that we said "from your site". If you choose to use Run Program links, test them very carefully after you've uploaded the HTML and program files to your site. Testing the HTML on your local drive isn't really testing at all. Unless the needed program files are where the link points, the link won't work at all.

Now suppose that instead of an executable program file, you create a Run Program link to, say, a Word .DOC file or an Acrobat .PDF file.

Once again, you must ensure that the file is where the link says it will be. And the user must have the program needed to view this file installed on their system, or the link won't work the way you expect it to.

In general, we recommend using Run Program links only if you're very certain of what you're doing and don't mind the fact that they won't work identically on all systems.

Because of the number of variables involved, we can't offer technical support for Run Program links. We can help you verify that PPT2HTML is creating the link properly; it's up to you to make sure that the link works.
